General Information

Approximately 220,000 Jews live in Argentina. Many Jews are living below the poverty line and the number is rapidly accelerating.
· The current financial crisis has had a devastating effect on all the institutions in the Jewish community, including congregations, schools, youth movements and camps.
· Social assistance agencies have been besieged with requests for basic needs such as food, medicine, clothing and shelter.

We are all concerned for the welfare of our chaverim in Argentina.

“DARKEI NOAM”
The Masorti Movement’s School for Counselor Training,
Buenos Aires, Argentina

The madrichim (counselors) in NOAM are teenagers in grades 10 though 12 (ages fifteen to eighteen years old). The madrichim are the essence of the youth movement. It is the madrichim who plan and lead the NOAM weekly activities with the younger children (grades 4 though 8, ages 9 to 14) under the supervision of a NOAM adviser in the kehillah and it is through the madrichim that youngsters learn about Masorti Judaism and Jewish values.

To be effective, madrichim need to be trained in Jewish studies, leadership skills, counseling techniques, educational philosophy and Masorti ideology. For this purpose, NOAM proposes the creation of Darkei NOAM, a unified school for madrichim.

NOAM high school youth will study in Darkei Noam. The 9th grade students will study and also work as interns in their NOAM chapters. Upon completion of their studies, they will become madrichim in NOAM.

High school students who are already serving as madrichim in NOAM will also participate in enrichment courses at Darkei Noam to improve their knowledge and the quality of their counseling skills. Darkei Noam ensures a continuity towards the future.

What we need

The project will cost a total of $42,660 per year. The project will get some funding from individual’s participation fees, the Jewish Agency and from BAMAH. Masorti Olami needs approximately $20,000 to cover the rest of the expenses of the project.

We need your help!

Project Description

220 ninth grade students from fifteen kehillot will participate in Darkei Noam. Meetings will take place twice a week, once in the student’s home kehillah and once in a central place. It is important that madrichim have the experience of studying simultaneously with their peers from NOAM. However, it is also important that they stay connected with their kehillah.

Four special days of intensive training on specific themes will take place during the year. In addition, a three-day seminar for intensive training will take place in October.
